From the explosive vocals that took Japan by storm at age 12 with SPEED, to her current mature artistry blending R&B and Okinawan folk, Hiroko Shimabukuro’s musical journey has spanned three decades. In 2026, celebrating her 30th anniversary, she returns to Taipei with a sound that is more personal than ever.

In this exclusive interview, Hiroko shares her joy in regaining her voice after a vocal crisis and why she chose to redefine her classics with groovy R&B arrangements. She poignantly notes that when singing those million-selling hits that defined a generation’s youth, she never feels lonely; beyond the souls of her fellow members, there are the Taiwanese fans—the "fifth members"—singing along with her.

Q1: 2026 marks your 30th anniversary. Looking back at your 30-year career, how has the meaning of "singing" changed for you? What message do you most want to convey through your voice now?

Hiroko: Looking back, I’ve had the privilege of exploring various musical styles. It hasn’t always been easy, but I feel I’ve followed the natural trajectory of my life on a wonderful musical journey. For me, singing has been a joy since childhood. Despite vocal issues where I almost lost my voice, I was lucky to find a great teacher who helped me rediscover my sound. If my voice brings joy to others, I want it to gently embrace everyone. To convey the sense that "you are not alone" and "it’s okay to be yourself" is my greatest happiness.

Q2: In this "30th Anniversary Live," you’ve reimagined many classics. Which song best represents your current state of mind? What new emotions or arrangements have you infused into your iconic hits like 〈White Love〉 or 〈Treasure〉?

Hiroko: After discussing with my arranger and band leader, Osamu Kurimoto, we decided to base the arrangements on R&B. This element is deeply connected to SPEED, and perhaps reflects a stronger groove within me. This style feels more like "me" now—it has a mature vibe that fits the Billboard Live atmosphere perfectly. Regarding the setlist, besides SPEED classics, I’ve included album tracks and songs from our reunion. For my solo work, I’ve picked the fan-favorite 〈Treasure〉 and personal favorites I’ve written. I also plan to sing tracks from Cocod’Or and the My Okinawa album. I’m so torn—there’s just not enough time (laughs)! As I’ve grown, the way I perceive the temperature and message of these songs has changed. I invite everyone to feel this "present" music and heartbeat with me. I believe the power of melody can trigger a private time-travel within everyone’s heart.

Q3: Your surprise reunion with Aisa Senda at Zepp Christmas Live 2023 moved many fans to tears. Returning to the Taipei stage now, what is your mindset? Do Taiwanese fans hold special memories for you?

Hiroko: Last time, standing on stage with Aisa-chan to sing 〈White Love〉 was unforgettable. I never imagined we’d sing together in Taiwan after all these years. I was deeply moved by the warmth of the fans who waited so long. To be honest, part of me wished we could have achieved this as the original four members, but I feel that music transcends time and boundaries. When I sing SPEED songs, I’m never alone; I feel my members beside me, and the fans—the "fifth members"—singing along. This is my首場 (first) solo show in Taiwan, and while I’m nervous, I’m more excited to create memories with the friends here who have supported me.

Q4: As a singer from Okinawa, many feel the vibe and pace of life in Okinawa and Taiwan are very similar. Have you gained inspiration from Taiwanese culture or musicians?

Hiroko: I agree! Taiwan and Okinawa feel very close. I remember being moved by the pure life force of Taiwanese indigenous music in Okinawa. I also saw A-Mei perform in a musical in Japan (Turandot, 2008) and her voice was stunning. My relatives studied in Taiwan and often send me photos of stylish cafes and great food. People here are so kind; it’s a place where I feel relaxed. Taiwan feels like a close friend to me.

Q5: Any Taiwanese food or places you want to try this time? A final message for your fans of 30 years?

Hiroko: I love Taiwanese tea, fruit, and hot pot! I also want to visit hot springs and temples again, and revisit Taipei 101 where Aisa took me. To everyone in Taiwan: How are you? Thank you for your support! Celebrating my 30th anniversary with a show in Taiwan makes me so happy. 30 years is a long time for everyone to experience life's changes. We’ve all become "adults," but music has the magic to take us back to that first moment in an instant. Spending this relaxed time with you through melody is my ultimate happiness. I can’t wait to see you!

"Music possesses a magic that can transport us back to that very first moment in an instant." For Hiroko Shimabukuro, these 30 years have never been a burden; instead, they have served as the nutrients that nourish her warm and tender voice. She remains eager to explore Taipei and savor Taiwanese tea, but most of all, she looks forward to meeting everyone who has waited all these years within the intimate setting of Billboard Live TAIPEI.

On May 12, we sincerely invite you to embark on this time-traveling journey with Hiroko Shimabukuro. Within those familiar melodies, rediscover the touch of your memories and meet the most authentic versions of each other today. Tickets are in the final countdown to selling out—see you there!
