Have you ever come across the viral sensation “Colors,” the track that sparked countless short-form video recreations across social media? Or perhaps the hit single “Villain,” which has amassed tens of millions of views online?
Today, we introduce the artist behind those numbers—the true protagonist hidden beneath the millions of streams: Stella Jang, a Korean-born “French-style hidden gem” songstress.
Born in Seoul in 1991, Stella Jang spent 11 years studying in France and graduated from the prestigious AgroParisTechwith a degree in life engineering. Fluent in Korean, French, and English, this “science-minded girl” transforms precision and logic into captivating melodies. Her music is not merely pleasant to the ear—it carries an intelligent wit, a subtle humor, and an unbounded, distinctly French sense of laid-back elegance.
Stella Jang’s beginnings are as unconventional as her music. A devoted fan of BIGBANG and a lover of hip-hop, she joined the hip-hop label Grandline armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar—an early sign of her refusal to follow the rules.
This unpredictability extends into her genre-fluid sound, effortlessly weaving through folk, rap, jazz, and balladry. She officially debuted in 2014 with “Dumped Yesterday,” and by 2016—upon graduating university—released her first EP Colors.
What first draws listeners in is the striking sense of everyday realism in her lyrics, often rooted in her own experiences.
“Dumped Yesterday” recounts the all-too-relatable experience of being broken up with via text, with rap verses that release emotion in a refreshingly candid way. Tracks like “Girl’s Generation,” which captures the innocent worries of youth, and “월요병가,” an anthem for the working crowd, further showcase her keen, humorous perspective on life—one that consistently resonates with listeners on an intimate level.
Her debut EP Colors became a global phenomenon, with its title track—built on simple English vocabulary and layered a cappella arrangements performed entirely by herself—sparking the viral “Color Challenge” across short-video platforms.
The song propelled her into the international spotlight. In 2021, “L’Amour, Les Baguettes, Paris” further highlighted her multilingual artistry, infusing music with a distinctly French sense of effortless romance.
Her diverse and powerful songwriting ability has also made her a trusted collaborator behind the scenes for top-tier K-pop acts such as BTS, NCT DREAM, and TXT.
Six years after her debut, Stella Jang released her first full-length album, STELLA I, a deeply introspective work capturing the turbulence of her late twenties.
Departing from her earlier lighthearted storytelling, this album leans into dark humor and self-examination. The standout track “Villain” explores inner conflict and identity, reflecting the complexities of self-perception.
At its core, the album expresses gratitude—for surviving the struggles of early adulthood, and for being able to sustain a life devoted to music.
Last year, Stella Jang unveiled her second full-length album, STELLA II. While its title echoes the first, its artistic scope expands significantly, presenting a more mature and fully realized vision. With her signature blend of humor and sincerity, she continues her journey of self-discovery.
In recent years, she has actively stepped onto the global stage, touring Canada and performing at Australia’s Vivid Sydney, steadily growing her international presence.
On May 9, this genre- and language-crossing artist will finally make her long-awaited debut in Taiwan at Billboard Live Taipei.
Performing with a full band setup—drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards—she will bring her music to life in an intimate, world-class venue.
An exclusive autograph session will also be held, making this a rare and unmissable experience for fans who have been waiting to witness her artistry up close.
